HallofFame | TechCrunch Disrupt SF Leaves the GenderAvenger Hall of Shame!

GenderAvenger has been keeping tabs on TechCrunch Disrupt SF for the last couple of years, and they have consistently placed themselves in the Hall of Shame with disappointing numbers of women speakers (14% in 2014, 28% in 2015). This year, we are happy to report that Disrupt SF 2016 has finally made it out of the Hall of Shame with 34% women speakers!

#HallofShame | UN Summit for Refugees and Migrants Opens with Only One Woman

The United Nations Summit for Refugees and Migrants is a historic first for the General Assembly as it calls together heads of states and government officials to create a blueprint of “a more responsible, predictable system for responding to large movements of refugees and migrants.” The Summit, held September 19 at the UN Headquarters in New York, will open with the presidents of the 70th and 71st General Assembly, the Secretary-General, the High Commissioner for Refugees, and a signing ceremony including various officials and representatives of migrant communities — and only one woman.

Last week, GenderAvenger put out a call for media and sports commentators to set higher standards when discussing the women athletes of the 2016 Olympic Games. This week, we’re happy to report that Sports Illustrated has gotten it right twice in a row! The latest cover features Team USA Olympic gold medalists Katie Ledecky, Michael Phelps, and Simone Biles. The women of Team USA shone brightly these Olympic Games. Kudos to Sports Illustrated for putting them front and center.

Their upcoming Learning, Creativity and Engagement conference on September 15, 2016 in London promises “some of the UK’s most innovative classroom practitioners” but includes zero women speakers. Where’s the innovation in that? Come on Independent Thinking, surely you can find equally innovative women educators!

#HallofShame | Stocktoberfest Tanks with 6% Women Speakers

What does "diverse investors" mean to you? Apparently, for the organizers at Stocktoberfest it means "men". Stocktoberfest is an active investor conference held in Coronado, California from October 13–15. This year’s event is advertised as "the biggest and most diverse group of Active Investors and Traders in its 5 year history." There’s only one problem: they’ve included almost no women, with a gender balance of barely 6% in their speaker line-up. Where’s the diversity in that?
